17 new employers seek students at career fair
Seventeen of the 204 employers attending the 2017 Spring Career Fair were first-time S&T career fair participants. Career opportunities and employer relations (COER) held the event on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Missouri is the home of 121 of the attending employers, with the remainder coming from 27 other states. Twenty employers were interested in hiring international students and 21 Fortune 500 companies were represented. The event set a new spring career fair attendance record with 2,342 students and alumni attending. In addition, 507 on-campus interviews were conducted the day following the career fair. The next career fair is scheduled for Sept. 26. COER staff are dedicated to helping students and alumni pursue their career dreams. They assist students in all stages of their careers, from summer internships, to co-ops and full-time employment.

S&T students aim to launch the next great business startup
S&T students Samuel Hardy and Eddie Hudson IV hope to create the next great business startup. They officially launched Victory Pieces LLC after participating in the Missouri S&T Entrepreneurial Internship and Cooperative Education Program (EICP), which is operated by Missouri S&T’s office of technology transfer and economic development (TTED).
Their venture is a service that partners with local and regional independent retailers to provide consumers with same-day delivery of online purchases and helps small independent retail store owners compete with the likes of Amazon and other large national e-commerce players.
Center for Sustainability hosts Missouri S&T Microgrid Industrial Consortium meeting
The Center for Sustainability hosted the semi-annual meeting of the Missouri S&T Microgrid Industrial Consortium on Jan. 12. The 29 attendees included current consortium members, faculty researchers, students, and guests. Consortium members reported that they were pleased with the research progress presented by Dr. Pourya Shamsi, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, Dr. Fatih Dogan, professor of materials science and engineering, and their students. During Shamsi’s presentation, he identified an opportunity to utilize consortium member data in his model for selecting the optimum battery location and size within a microgrid. George Mues, Ameren’s technology transfer manager (R&D), corporate planning, agreed to host a follow-up meeting at Ameren on Jan. 19, to facilitate the gathering of the data for the model.
Guests Dr. Alistair Davidson, representing the International Lead Agency, and Boris Monahov, representing the Advanced Lead Acid Battery Consortium, led a discussion on the potential to partner on a lead acid battery microgrid demonstration project in the Missouri S&T EcoVillage. They will be following up with a partnership agreement proposal.
